Start Earlier Than You Think You Need To
Give yourself as much runway as possible. A private sale of a clean, registered car in Adelaide typically takes two to six weeks from listing to settled funds — longer if the car is unusual, high-kilometre or approaching a rego renewal. Start contacting buyers at least two weeks before your departure date so there is room for negotiation and paperwork, and start a private listing a good deal earlier than that.
The trap is the last-minute scramble. In the final fortnight before an international move you are dealing with removalists, bank accounts, utilities and family, and you will not have the patience to hold out for a good offer. Buyers can tell, and they price accordingly.
Your Options, Ranked by Time Required
- Private sale — two to six weeks. Highest headline price, but only realistic for a well-presented car with current registration and service history. It also requires you to be available for inspections and test drives right up to the end.
- Dealer trade-in or buy-back — one to two weeks. Fast and low-effort, but you are not buying another car, so a dealer has limited incentive to be generous.
- Sell to a car removal and wrecking company — same day. One phone call, a firm offer, and collection at a time you choose. Best option for an older car, a car with problems, an unregistered car, or simply a timeline that has run out.
- Ship it with you. Almost never worth it. Import duty, compliance and modification requirements in the destination country routinely exceed the value of an ordinary used car.

Keep the Car Until the Last Possible Day

- Lodge a notice of disposal with Service SA. Until the disposal is recorded, the vehicle remains registered to you — which means expiations, tolls and any incident involving that car can land on your name while you are on the other side of the world, with a local address that no longer exists.
- Cancel the registration and return the plates, and claim the refund on the unused portion of your rego and CTP. On a car with several months left, that refund is not trivial.
- Cancel your comprehensive insurance and claim the pro-rata refund.
- Clear any finance. A car with money owing against it on the PPSR cannot be transferred cleanly, and the debt does not disappear when you board a plane.
- Empty the car properly — toll tags, dash cams, garage remotes, and anything in the glove box with your details on it.
- Keep copies of everything, stored somewhere you can reach from abroad.
